Former CLAS Director Arturo Valenzuela Named Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs

Former CLAS Director Dr. Arturo Valenzuela is currently serving as the top U.S. diplomat for Latin America in his capacity as Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs. Dr. Valenzuela is an expert on Latin American politics, democratic theory and governance, and the U.S-Latin American relationship. 

Prior to coming to CLAS, Dr. Valenzuela served as a Special Assistant to the President, Senior Director for Inter-American Affairs at the National Security Council, and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs at the U.S. Department of State during the Clinton Administration.
