SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES
CLAS students are involved in numerous activities during the summer months. Some choose to take courses at Georgetown through the University's School for Summer and Continuing Education, while others travel to Chile to earn graduate credit through CLAS' program at Universidad Adolfo Ibanez (see below for details).
Many students use the summer to travel to Latin America to conduct research. Such activities may be supported by CLAS Travel Grants. To learn more about the recent research conducted by students with such grants, read their research reports.
Other students pursue jobs or internships, both abroad and domestically, during the summer.
STUDY IN CHILE
CLAS sponsors an eight-week summer program in Santiago, Chile, from mid-June through mid-August each year. This graduate-level program is conducted entirely in Spanish. The course is presented as a six-credit module, encompassing a variety of contemporary topics in Chile, especially politics, economics, and culture. The module incorporates visits to sites of political, cultural, and economic interest and is taught by professors and practitioners from Santiago de Chile who are recognized experts their fields. Students who would like to pursue an independent internship or research project are encouraged to explore these options on their own and in consultation with CLAS. While the program does not specifically arrange for these options, motivated students may find them a beneficial complement to the six-credit module. For more information, contact Julie Walsh in the Center for Latin American Studies.
Read details of this year's program module. The 2006 program in Santiago will run from June 19 to August 18. Students are expected to be in Santiago on June 13, 2006 to look for housing. The application for the 2006 program is due on May 1. The fee for the program for current Georgetown students (students must be enrolled at Georgetown as of May 1) is $2,925. The fee for non-Georgetown students is $3,725. For all participants, a non-refundable $500 deposit is due on May 1. The balance is due on May 15. Participants will arrange their own travel, housing, and meals and are responsible for all costs associated with these and other expenses.
Enrollment preference is given to current MA students in Latin American Studies at Georgetown University. Other applications will be considered on a space available basis. Graduate students from other Georgetown programs and other universities are encouraged to apply, as are qualified juniors and seniors pursuing Georgetown's Undergraduate Certificate in Latin American Studies. Advanced undergraduate students from the universities with which Georgetown's Center for Latin American Studies has established a 5-year cooperative degree program are also encouraged to apply. Because this is primarily a graduate-level program, students are expected to be mature and independent enough to arrange their own travel and housing and to navigate Chilean systems for library and computer usage.
