On April 18th, the CLAS Program on the Political Economy of Latin America and the Caribbean (ProPELAC) held an event titled “China’s Expanding Role in Latin America,” featuring panelists Ming Leng, Barbara Kotschwar, Francisco Urdinez, and Gonzalo Paz. The panelists offered insights into China’s relationship with the LAC region. Over the past decade, China has sought to establish itself as a global power by increasing investments, trade, technology, credit, and assistance to the region. Furthermore, the panelists discussed the soft power mechanisms that China has developed through education and media. As other global powers are displaced, this trend is likely to persist in the long run, underscoring the need for further study and analysis of China’s influence, in the LAC region and worldwide.
