Title: CLAS Launches LACCOM, the Latin America and the Caribbean COVID-19 map

LACCOM Welcome Page with Map of Latin America

On August 10th, 2020, Georgetown University’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) launched LACCOM, the Latin America and the Caribbean COVID-19 map.

As the pandemic began to spread throughout Latin America and the Caribbean in late spring of 2020, CLAS began to follow and evaluate the impact and responses to the pandemic in all countries as well as in six European territories in the region by the public and private sectors, civil society, as well as international and regional organizations and extra territorial actors. LACCOM is the result of the work of thirteen students (9 graduate and 4 undergraduates) affiliated with CLAS who, since the summer of 2020 and under the supervision of CLAS Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Angelo Rivero Santos, have collected, systematically organized and analyzed data and information under the three rubrics that are the core of Georgetown University’s engagement with Latin America: governance and the rule of law; growth and innovation; and social and cultural inclusion.

Father Matthew Carnes, CLAS Director, indicated that the map is intended “to serve as an important educational tool for students, researchers, and policy makers from around the world interested in the impact and responses to what is without doubt the most serious public health crisis that has impacted the region in over a century.”

LACCOM will be regularly updated throughout the 2020-21 academic year. The Spanish version of the map is being developed and will be available in late September.
