On February 28, 2024, Ph.D. candidate Aned Ladino from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese shared her current research about forms of Afro-Colombian female resistance and resilience as related to Petrona Martinez’s music album Ancestras. During the discussion, Aned spoke of the musical genre bullerengue, which is featured throughout the album. She explored how the oral and musical traditions of bullerengue contribute to social transformation by highlighting black women’s spirituality, motherhood, and gender violence, as well as how, through collaborative female practices, these themes become a form of resistance. She also highlighted the way that this album has brought together women from all over Latin America and the Caribbean in order to collaborate on various songs and create collective resistance.
