SIGLA Hackathon

On April 4th, 2025, SIGLA (the States and Institutions of Governance in Latin America database project, www.sigladata.org) hosted its very first Hackathon!

The Spring 2025 edition of the SIGLA Hackathon brought together more than 12 participants with different academic and professional experiences. Supported by SIGLA Research Assistants, the participating teams collaborated to develop innovative and creative ways to analyze data on the legal and political institutions of Latin America.

During this 4-hour event, participants were introduced to SIGLA’s history, mission, personnel, and structure. The teams were guided through a brief tour of the SIGLA website and its four browsing routes and given the rules of the Hackathon. After this, the groups had two hours to respond to the following prompt in a five-minute presentation before a Jury:

“Using the SIGLA data available on the website, how would you describe the relationship between the executive and legislature in Brazil, Colombia,and/or Mexico? Be sure to expand on your answer by explaining the data you chose to arrive at this conclusion.”

We are excited to congratulate the first-place winners of the Hackathon, Gabriel Angarita, Shriya Matta, and Alyssa Miller, and the runners up, Adriana de la Calle Viscasillas, Olivia Martin Johnson, Gabriela Pajuelo, and Nicky Pesquin!
