On March 24, 2024, CLAS hosted the fifth LAC Moments of the academic year featuring Dr. Robert Fatton and Mr. Keith Mines in a discussion concerning the recent turmoil in Haiti following decades of political disruptions, a series of natural disasters, and ongoing gang violence. In addition, the panelists highlighted the important role of civil society, public servants, and regional cooperation in bringing stability to the nation. Panelists discussed the potential reluctance by the United States and other international actors to engage directly in Haiti’s crisis given the complexities implicit in such intervention. Underlying the conversation was the agreed upon fact that Haiti remains extremely isolated in the region. Panelists emphasized the possibility of international actors assuming new roles in efforts to stabilize the political situation of the country, the growth of civil society, and efforts of public servants to bring stability.
