Title: REPAL Conference

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at Georgetown University hosted the Red para el Estudio de la Economía Política de América Latina’s (REPAL) Annual Meeting on July 12-13, 2024, kickstarted by an all-day dissertation workshop on July 11th. This event marked the 10th annual conference of REPAL and brought together over 60 scholars to present papers and participate in thought-provoking discussions. The local committee was composed of CLAS’s own Dr. Diana Kapiszewski, Fr. Matthew Carnes, and Grecia Prieto Colón (MA Candidate, Georgetown University).

Over the course of two days, attendees from across the Americas explored a wide range of themes, including environmental and resource management, energy policy, political polarization, and socio-economic outcomes. A special highlight of the conference was the keynote roundtable, featuring esteemed scholars in Latin American political economy: Alison Post (University of California, Berkeley), Alisha Holland (Harvard University), Ben Ross Schneider (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and Juan Pablo Luna (Universidad Católica de Chile). These panelists reflected on REPAL’s decade of achievements and outlined a forward-looking agenda for the network.

The conference concluded with a timely panel titled “The US Elections’ Implications for Latin America,” featuring William LeoGrande (American University), Margaret Myers (Inter-American Dialogue), Jamil Scott (Georgetown University), and Arturo Valenzuela (Georgetown University). This panel was organized by CLAS, REPAL’s institutional host for the next three years.
