On Thursday, November 7th, 2024, the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) welcomed H.E. Juan Gabriel Valdés S, Chile’s Ambassador to the U.S., as part of its Ambassador Series. The Series is designed to provide the CLAS and GU community an opportunity to meet and talk with the region’s Ambassadors about contemporary issues impacting their country and the hemisphere.
Moderator and Academic Director of CLAS, Professor Angelo Rivero Santos, asked pointed questions that touched upon democracy, regional stability, and the role of diplomacy in regional and transregional relationships. Ambassador Valdés addressed these complex themes concisely and straightforwardly, allowing students to grapple with these themes more easily and engage in deep critical thinking, which was highlighted in the subsequent student-led Q&A. The conversation ended with the Ambassador’s invaluable insights and advice to Georgetown University’s future diplomats and policymakers.
