Brazil Program

Summer in São Paulo, Brazil 2020

  • Program Type: Coursework / Internships / Research
  • Program Dates: May 18 – August 7, 2020
  • Application Deadline: January 16, 2020

The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at Georgetown University offers a six-credit summer academic program in São Paulo, Brazil in association with the Fundação Getúlio Vargas/SP.

About

The program includes a 6-week intensive Portuguese language course in the morning (95 hours), cultural activities on evenings and weekends (8 hours), a 4-week course focusing on issues related to different aspects of development (45 hours), and an internship in an NGO, a think tank, a government office, a business, or industry. The internship begins part-time (20 hours/week) and increases to full-time (40 hours/week) by the end of the summer. Participants work with Georgetown faculty members to attain internships that will fully engage student background and interests.

Students receive 6 graduate credits for the program, three for the class at Fundação Getúlio Vargas/SP and three for the academic work related to the internship. Students should plan to begin the internship a few days after arriving in São Paulo. During the first six weeks, time will be divided between the internship and advanced Portuguese language classes designed to meet Department of Education FLAS summer grants expectations. During the month of July, time will be divided between the internship and an advanced graduate class on Brazilian politics and economics at Fundação Getúlio Vargas/SP. The rest of the time will be devoted full time to the internship.

Once you are admitted into a program, CLAS will work to place you into a professional internship in the country you have chosen.

Previous internships have included:

  • Federação das Indústrias do Estado de São Paulo (FIESP)
  • Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV)
  • Conectas Direitos Humanos
  • Falconi Consultores
  • Coordenação de Políticas para LGBT da Prefeitura do Município de São Paulo

The six credits earned are applicable towards the MA in Latin American Studies at Georgetown and may be applicable toward other graduate degrees (please check with your program). The program has focused generally on themes of international relations, governance, social movements and participatory budgeting. Its overall goal is to expand participants’ knowledge of contemporary Latin American topics.

The program is open to students enrolled in graduate programs in any U.S. university. Specifically with regard to the MA in Latin American Studies at Georgetown, students concentrating in Government, Anthropology, Development, Cultural Studies, Political Economy may benefit the most from participating in the program.
